Appropriate Weather

Saturday. Rainy day for the first day of the long weekend. Pretty appropriate day I thought to write in a new blog.

The Long Weekend in May – early this year it seems. I didn’t realize it was the long weekend until Friday, when I saw a friend’s “Facebook” status as “busy packing up the kids and the car for the long-weekend drive to the cottage.” “What?” I thought to myself – I may have actually uttered it aloud in a more emphatic “W-H-A-T?” kind of way. I know for sure that I checked my iCal Calendar because I thought maybe it was my friend that was a week too early and perhaps on crack. But I was the one who had it wrong.

I considered for a minute that I was just oblivious, then I reconsidered, and realized that having a home-based business meant you sacrifice alot of things, while you gain other things. One thing that seems to get sacrificed is a direct daily connection to the world around you. Suddenly the world becomes very very small, all within the confines of one’s home office. And the Calendar and holidays, really don’t have the impact they used to with an office 9-5 job. Freedom of schedule is gained when you work for yourself, so the “much anticipated” days off from the 9-5 don’t really apply and, in the end we lack something to look forward to – we can have a day off whenever we choose to.

Add to that the absence of a vehicle and the disconnect seems to become greater still. A concerted effort has to be made to go anywhere – especially out of town on a long-weekend.
