Two Johnny’s and a Turkey

Yesterday was turkey buying day. Every year we head to St. Andrew’s Poultry in Kensington Market to buy a fresh (never frozen) young turkey for Thanksgiving. We do this not only because their price is right, but also because the young turkeys are hard to find fresh. They are the right size for two people who might be having a couple friends over for Thanksgiving Dinner, like we are, who don’t want to be eating turkey for days and days after. 10-12 pounds gives you a great turkey to show off, with just the right amount of leftovers for everyone to enjoy (including doggie bags for guest who haven’t had their fill of turkey by Monday evening!)

So, Heather and I got our turkey, put it in the knap sack on Heather’s back and started heading back home. While on the streetcar to Kensington I was looking out the window when we stopped at Dundas and Yonge and I noticed a cool new diner-type restaurant called Johnny Rockets. The sign said they made good burgers, fries, shakes etc., and I knew by the time we were done getting the turkey we would go for lunch on our way home. When I met Heather in Kensington, and knowing how much Heather likes a good burger, I made the suggestion we stop there on our way home and grab a bite for lunch. Plus the closing down of Happy Seven Restaurant due to the whole rat fiasco didn’t bode well for dining on chinese for lunch. The turkey would be fine in the knap sack while we had lunch. Besides, we could just jump on the subway for a faster retreat home afterwards. Read the rest of this entry »
